How to Save Money by Declining Housekeeping at Your Walt Disney World Resort!

Did you know you can technically save money if you decline housekeeping in Walt Disney World? Many guests do not realize that if you decline housekeeping or what Disney calls mouse-keeping, you will receive $10 for each night you stay. So how do you do it?

How to decline Mousekeeping?

Declining housekeeping has become easier thanks to the online check-in section in the my Disney Experience app. When you check-in, the app will give you an option to decline mousekeeping and the estimated amount you will receive back in a Disney Giftcard. If you are unable to do this in the My Disney Experience app, you can also deny it at the front desk on the first day of your trip.

How much will I receive?

You will receive a minimum of $10 a day if you are staying at a non-deluxe Disney resort. If you are staying at a Deluxe Disney Resort it can be up to $15 a day. Disney likes to change this randomly, so I would recommend calling your hotel and asking what their rate is. You will not receive the $10 on the day you check out because they have to clean the room that day. So the best way to estimate how much you will receive is to take the number of days you will be staying, subtract 1, and multiply by $10.

How do they pay me?

You will receive this money on a Disney Gift Card. Sometimes Disney will give them to you at the front desk if you deny it there and sometimes to the email associated with your account. This past trip they emailed an e-giftcard to my email. This gift card can be used anywhere on property.

I personally use this to pay off my room charges at the end of the trip. Throughout the trip, I will charge restaurant tips to my room and then use this gift card to help pay them off. It is a win-win situation.

How to get more towels etc?

Obviously, throughout your trip, you will more than likely run out of towels or something if you decline housekeeping. (During my trips its always towels) When you run out of something you can either call housekeeping or flag down a housekeeper in the middle of the day while they are in the halls. They will happily give you what you need.

If I decline housekeeping will anyone come into my room?

Even though you have declined housekeeping, someone will come into your room every day. After the shooting in Las Vegas, it became federal law that every hotel room must be checked on by management every day to make sure that everything is OK. This is also something to keep in mind if you have small children who will be coming back to the room to take naps. You may want to speak with someone at the front desk to get a general idea of when management will be stopping by. You may be able to coordinate with the hotel to ensure that no one is coming in and interrupting your child’s nap.

Declining housekeeping might not be for everyone but I find that it is a great way to save on your Walt Disney World trip. Every penny counts!
